Not old enough yet
Even though I have been working with digital media mostly I have empathy for the contemporary art scene to avoid anything that is related to "new media". I get the impression that it is impossible to meet expectations concerning "content", "meaning" or "expression" in a medium that is just being explored and mainly occupied with "sensations" and "experiences".
From this viewpoint the fact that all sorts of software art are beginning to appear outdated compared to emerging fields like bio-art or robotics is actually good news! As soon as software artists and designers have fired all their ammunition and everyone is used to all those swarm behaviours, video tracking techniques, database mashups and so on, maybe the audience as well as the artists are ready to focus on other aspects of the work like: "How does it make me feel?"... and... "why?"
But there is still the other option of course, to quickly dive into the next medium, to take part in the rat-race of discovering new sensations. But - hey! - you better make sure to get there first!
